I let my beard grow for two months, and by the start of the third month, I was rocking a thick beard. Wherever I went, people addressed me with more respect and assumed that I was older.

  1. Stand in front of a mirror, pull your hair back and then take note of the outline of your face to determine whether your face shape is triangle, oval, round, oblong, heart, diamond, square.
  2. If you are still not sure, you can trace the outline of your face in a mirror using a bar of soap or chalk to determine your face shape.
  3. Stand in front of a mirror, use one hand to pull your hair back and other to trace the outline of your face on the mirror.
  4. The shape of the outline is generally the shape of the face.

If you don’t want to put effort into maintaining a full-grown beard but still want to avoid a clean shave, then stubble is what you need. Depending upon how you groom and maintain your stubble, it can highlight your cheekbones making your face appear more chiseled.

A Ducktail beard is a full facial hairstyle, shaped in such a way that it looks like a duck’s tail, roughly takes 4-8 months to grow, and requires a lot of maintenance.

What makes this beard style unique is the prominent growth of hair on the chin. Sides, neck, and mustache are consistently trimmed, whereas chin hair is grown out.

To style a ducktail beard, first, you need to grow a full-face beard and then shape it into a ducktail. The average length of a ducktail beard is 2-4 inches and will take around 4-8 months to grow before you can shape it into a ducktail style.

Since ducktail beard is a professional beard style, get it trimmed and shaped by a professional barber for the first few times until you feel comfortable enough to maintain the edges and shape yourself.

4. Chevron Beard

If I had the right to decide which beard style looked good on me, I would have decided on the chevron beard.

What makes this beard style unique is the thick facial hair covering the top lip. This beard style is a bold statement and a big commitment since it needs regular trimming and styling to keep it sharp.

To style a chevron beard, let your facial hair grow for 2-3 months, keep the facial hair covering the top lip, angle it downwards at the corners of the lip, and then shave the rest of the beard or keep a little stubble.

5. Chin Strap

From a thin chin strap defining your jawbone to a classic strap beard without a mustache, a chin strap comes in a lot of variations. However, this beard style is not for everyone.

Unless you have a strong jawline and can grow hair to cover the entire jawline and chin on both sides of your face, don’t try this beard style.

6. Bandholz Beard

This is the most aggressive beard style on the list and can only be rocked by guys with strong beard growth. Moreover, this beard style requires a lot of grooming and maintenance.

Moreover, Unlike other beard styles, the Bandholz beard does not stop at a certain length, it grows to whatever length you desire. This beard style was created by Eric Bandholz, founder of Beardbrand in 2011.

To style bandholz beard, Make sure you use a good amount of natural beard oil as you are growing out and trim your beard consistently (2-3 days) to cuts off the narrow tips of the hair.

Keep in mind, growing a beard takes time, however, it takes proper care to keep your beard healthy, soft. Whether a beard style looks good on you depends upon your face shape and grooming.
