Have you ever met a person whose voice demands respect? They look average, not worthy of much attention, and then they start talking, and even though you were feeling sleepy, you snap back to attention, listening carefully to every word they say.

There is something divine about their voice, even though it’s hoarse. It has a charming effect to it, and you wonder why you weren’t born with a voice like that.

As a man, the desire for a deeper voice is ever-lasting. However, most of us just sound normal, average. There is no divinity in our voices, we are no singers, we don’t even have a radio show voice.

But this doesn’t mean you don’t want to be heard, you don’t want your voice to insinuate authority. Maybe having a voice like that could make all the difference in your life.

And the reality is voice holds a lot of power. Voice is the reason why singers are so popular, Politicians are so successful, and people listen to radio shows.

Moreover, Women also prefer men with deeper voices and find what they say more memorable than men with higher-pitched voices.

So, if you don’t have a deeper, manly voice and are ready to put in the effort to change your voice, here are 5 steps you can take to develop a deeper manly voice:

5 Steps to a Deeper Manly Voice

These steps will help you in improving your voice depending on how much effort you put in and your vocal cords. However, there is a limit to how much you can change your voice.

You may not sound like Morgan Freeman after following the steps, but your voice will get better than right now.

Step 1. Learn How to Talk Confidently

Don’t assume confidence is all you need. Confidence is like the cherry on the top.

No matter how deep your voice is, it ain’t worth anything if you are fumbling your way through every time you are in an intense situation.

Before I get to the part where you train your voice, you need to go through the confidence lake, where you rid yourself of fumbling as you speak. (If you don’t fumble and are confident when you speak, you can skip this step.)

If you fumble while speaking, there is only one reason for that: You are nervous, probably out of your usual element, maybe you are on stage forced to give a speech, and you want to sound authoritative, but you are fumbling, or you are talking to your crush, and instead of impressing her, all you can do is fumble through your sentences.

The only way to get confident at speaking and talking to people is to do it again and again. There is no magical pill or a book you can read or visualization you can do. To get good at talking to people, you have to go out and practice. This is the ultimate way.

Man talking to a woman

If you are preparing for a speech, go out and find people who are willing to listen and give a speech. Just do it. Every Sunday, go out with only one objective, to meet people and give a speech. Even if your voice is not manly, you will gain the confidence to get your point across.

If you are trying to sound manly in normal conversations, go out and talk to strangers and try your best to be confident. Every day make it a task that you will talk to one stranger confidently.

Moreover, even when you are training your voice, talk to as many people as you can. Practice your openings and try to talk with a deeper voice.

Training your voice to be deeper and manly is only one part of the equation, your ability to go out and talk confidently without fumbling is the other part.

And the more you do it, the better you will get at it. If you practice consistently, you may even reach a point where you are in an intense situation, a situation where you can barely breathe properly, and you still sound authoritative, certain, and manly.

Step 2. Breath, Diaphragm, Mouth, and Your Voice

Here’s how your breath, diaphragm, and mouth are linked to your voice:

  1. No one can speak on inhalation everyone speaks on exhalation. As a result, the deeper you can breathe in, the more words you can speak clearly and louder as you breathe out.
  2. You can have a deep voice speaking through your nose. However, if you speak through your mouth, your voice will sound better, richer, and deeper.
  3. If you breathe in through your nose and down into the lower depths of your belly as your diaphragm contracts and speak through your mouth as you exhale, your voice will sound deeper and richer.

In a way, significant change will occur to your voice when you adopt diaphragmatic breathing and speak from your mouth than your nose.

To practice diaphragmatic breathing, all you have to do is breathe in through your nose and try to direct the air into your abdomen and lower ribs as your diaphragm contracts and exhale through your nose or mouth.

You can practice speaking through your mouth by reading every day out loud. Just like any other habit, you have to practice diaphragm breathing and speaking from your mouth to get used to it.

Performing yoga breathing exercises is another way to train your voice. Lion breath is especially good for your throat.

Step 3. Talk Less, Slowly, and Always Sound Monotone

There are two things you need to do in this step to make your voice sound deeper and authoritative. The first thing you need to do is talk less and slowly.

No matter how much you develop your voice, if you keep talking unnecessarily, you are not putting yourself in a good position as long as authority is concerned. It is impossible to take someone seriously if they talk endlessly.

If you think you are going to impress people with your words, then you should prepare yourself for a brutal awakening. People will always be influenced by what you do, not by what you say.

Moreover, if you talk endlessly, you are like an open book with no edge or mystery.

So, if you aim to sound authoritative and have a seductive voice so that you can improve your dating game, you should consider talking less. If you are developing a deeper voice for singing, you can skip this one.

You should also not rush while talking. It makes you look unsure of yourself, less clear. Again if you are developing a deeper voice for singing, you can skip this one too.

The second thing you need to do: Be more monotone.

Normally people try to sound less monotone. However, recent studies have shown that men with monotonous voices are more attractive to women.

Moreover, studies show that voices that vary less in pitch are considered deep since pitch variation is an important factor in deciding whether a voice is deep or not.

This is a card you should not use unless you naturally draw attention. If you struggle at drawing attention to yourself, a monotone voice is the worst thing you can have.

But if you are naturally the center of attention due to your physique or achievements, a monotone voice is something you can use to sound more masculine. People will be drawn to you due to their inability to figure you out.

Just do what John Wayne says:

“Talk low, Talk slow, and don’t talk too much.”

Step 4. Perform Voice Deepening Exercise: Head Raising Hum

Daily work create permanent change. To deepen your voice, you have to train your voice daily. The simplest way to do this is by practicing Head Raising Hum.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Start with your head down and your chin against your chest
  2. Let out a deep hum from your diaphragm and continue it as you slowly raise your chin off your chest.
  3. Pass up through your normal head position and keep going up slowly until your head and chin are pointing up into the air as you finish your hum.
  4. Try to maintain a deep natural tone even if your hum goes up in pitch as you stretch toward the sky.
  5. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times twice a day.

Step 5. Develop Your Natural Voice

Yes, it sounds cliche. However, at the end of the day, you have to work with what you have. The best thing you can do is emphasize the positive aspects of your voice while downplaying the negative.

You can use apps like Vocularapp to find how deep your voice is. You can check whether you have an undulating pitch or a low monotone. By testing your voice and practicing, You will find one or two directions you can work on to improve the quality of your voice, and you need to stick with it.

Conclusion

Voice is your instrument to make people listen to you. If you are not satisfied with how you sound, there is something you can do about it.

However, there is a limit, and you will not sound like someone else. You have your own unique voice, whether you like it or not, and you can’t change it. All you can do is take it to its peak potential through effort.

And yelling won’t make your voice deeper it will only damage your vocal cords.
